AIRC's 2012 Summer Archaeological Field School kicked off on June 18 with the arrival and check-in of our 32 participants from 25 schools located in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, followed by an intensive exploration of the city of Rome from the 19th through the 23rd. Despite sweltering heat - this was the hottest June on record since records have been kept! (230 years) - the participants marched tirelessly across the city and around Ostia Antica.
After a day of introductory on-site lectures about archaeological professionalism, safety, and topography, the participants spent two days clearing the debris around the site and mapping the trenches before breaking ground on Thursday the 28th. We look forward to four more productive and exciting weeks!
